Germany- Why can’t we be friends?

Germany- Why can’t we be friends?

There are many things Germany is comfortably better at than other countries; high speed driving, mullets and football among them. Yet, life is not entirely idyllic in the land of chocolate. Despite all of Germany’s success in auto-mobile manufacture and software design, Germany is apparently unfriendly. According to the Internations Expat Insider survey 2016, Germany was ranked 55th out of 67 counties for ease of settling in and 55th in overall friendliness. Despite Germany being ranked higher for job security, political stability, peacefulness, safety and child health, it is surely the accusation of unfriendliness that will be remembered. Who’s afraid of the AfD?

Who’s afraid of the AfD?

Yesterdays saw elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern return a 20.8% share of the vote for the AfD, allowing newspapers and media outlets to dust off and print various candid images of Angela Merkel looking stressed and/or defeated. Having seen so many of these images, I’m beginning to think Merkel should simply spend her time in public smiling … Continue reading

I will not be scared

I will not be scared

Scrolling through Facebook over the last couple of days, I came across a post that reminded me of something: for the majority of my life and the lives of many people my age, we have been under some level of threat from terrorists. It also reminded me of one of my early memories. I remember … Continue reading

Brexit: the worst episode of Game of Thrones

Brexit: the worst episode of Game of Thrones

Spolier Warning for Game of Thrones, you have been warned. We have entered week three of the Brexit debacle and as many media outlets have gleefully pointed out, the UK seems to resemble George R.R. Martin’s magnum opus more and more by the day. The world of Westeros, with its white walkers, dragons and nonchalant … Continue reading

Predict-a-thon 2014

Predict-a-thon 2014

2013 is slowly receding into the distance and as we stand forlornly on the a railway platform, waving a hanky, we wipe a single tear from our collective eyes. Oh, 2013, you were such a lovely companion with all your choice tit-bits of news and occasional revelations, we’ll miss you. But wait! Who is this … Continue reading

Escape from the village

Escape from the village

For those with a mind to travel around Germany, there are plenty of options. Recently, with the growth in popularity of the Bundesliga, Germany has seen an increase in the number of ‘football tourists’ coming to enjoy the fan focused world of Dortmund or Munich. Others among you might have already treated yourselves to the … Continue reading

Wedding Planning for Beginners

Wedding Planning for Beginners

As of last Thursday, I have a year until my wedding. At the moment, the enormity of the event is so far away that to be perfectly honest, it all seems imaginary. Thankfully, having a German fiancée means that we’reactually ahead of schedule. This is despite her obvious handicap of having a thoroughly disorganised British … Continue reading

A Very German Scandal

A Very German Scandal

Politics and scandal are regular bedfellows, but I’m fairly sure that this was never originally intended. The problem with politics is that it sounds great until you add the human element. Like anything good, humans tend to mess up everything in fantastic fashion, given half the chance. Every year sees a series of new scandals … Continue reading

Sexy News Roundup

Sexy News Roundup

Due to the success of my last news round up, I decided to get in on the lucrative world of news. Ok, it’s not so lucrative. Also, for full disclosure, today’s title is kind of misleading. There isn’t much sex, unless of course you consider Boris Johnson to be sexy. In that case you have … Continue reading

Five Royal Improvements

Five Royal Improvements

As the focus of the world’s media turns to stare intently at the doors of a small clinic in London, I have begun to wonder if I really am missing out on something. Despite to the best efforts of the British media, I get the feeling there are not so many who really care about … Continue reading
