Maintaining Confusion

Maintaining Confusion

When I initially moved to Germany, I was amazed on a daily basis. This is what I have come to term “the holiday effect”, that is to say, when you move away from anywhere you have lived for a long time, you continually notice the differences. Obviously when you move to a different country, everything … Continue reading

Germany- Why can’t we be friends?

Germany- Why can’t we be friends?

There are many things Germany is comfortably better at than other countries; high speed driving, mullets and football among them. Yet, life is not entirely idyllic in the land of chocolate. Despite all of Germany’s success in auto-mobile manufacture and software design, Germany is apparently unfriendly. According to the Internations Expat Insider survey 2016, Germany was ranked 55th out of 67 counties for ease of settling in and 55th in overall friendliness. Despite Germany being ranked higher for job security, political stability, peacefulness, safety and child health, it is surely the accusation of unfriendliness that will be remembered. Who’s afraid of the AfD?

Who’s afraid of the AfD?

Yesterdays saw elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern return a 20.8% share of the vote for the AfD, allowing newspapers and media outlets to dust off and print various candid images of Angela Merkel looking stressed and/or defeated. Having seen so many of these images, I’m beginning to think Merkel should simply spend her time in public smiling … Continue reading

I will not be scared

I will not be scared

Scrolling through Facebook over the last couple of days, I came across a post that reminded me of something: for the majority of my life and the lives of many people my age, we have been under some level of threat from terrorists. It also reminded me of one of my early memories. I remember … Continue reading

Toy Fairs, Expats and Expense Accounts

Everywhere the Queen visits, as the old adage goes, smells of new paint. Of course this is probably apocryphal. As we all know, lizard monsters from the planet Zarg can’t smell. However, the general truth of the statement still stands, there are people that must believe that the world is solely occupied by well manicured, … Continue reading

What can go wrong?

What can go wrong?

Stress. It’s an aspect of life that we all encounter in various different ways. There is work stress, home stress, stress when shopping or the special kind of stress that creeps up behind you wielding a large bat. To balance these various kinds of stress, we each attempt to deal with it in a different … Continue reading

Oh, I’m going to Ikea!

Oh, I’m going to Ikea!

Moving house is a trauma, but to be honest, it’s probably about time. We live on the top floor of a small block of flats which has led to a number of thoroughly annoying occurrences. First, due to the close proximity of the roof, our ceilings slant awkwardly at the far edges. This wouldn’t be … Continue reading

Stop stealing our words!

Stop stealing our words!

Anyone learning the German language knows it can be a baffling and complex process, even when you’re really trying. I personally have been trying to get to grips with it for the last two years. Even when I think I have it, I don’t. One of the most important lessons i learned early on was … Continue reading
