Germany- Why can’t we be friends?

Germany- Why can’t we be friends?

There are many things Germany is comfortably better at than other countries; high speed driving, mullets and football among them. Yet, life is not entirely idyllic in the land of chocolate. Despite all of Germany’s success in auto-mobile manufacture and software design, Germany is apparently unfriendly. According to the Internations Expat Insider survey 2016, Germany was ranked 55th out of 67 counties for ease of settling in and 55th in overall friendliness. Despite Germany being ranked higher for job security, political stability, peacefulness, safety and child health, it is surely the accusation of unfriendliness that will be remembered. Who’s afraid of the AfD?

Who’s afraid of the AfD?

Yesterdays saw elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern return a 20.8% share of the vote for the AfD, allowing newspapers and media outlets to dust off and print various candid images of Angela Merkel looking stressed and/or defeated. Having seen so many of these images, I’m beginning to think Merkel should simply spend her time in public smiling … Continue reading

Change is the only constant

Change is the only constant

My friends, change is good. Whether it’s routines, pants or a pocket full of twenty pences, change can tell you a lot about a person or even a culture. Greek philosophers have mused on it, Presidents have pondered it and now Germany is staring down the train tracks at the change locomotive as it careers … Continue reading

I will not be scared

I will not be scared

Scrolling through Facebook over the last couple of days, I came across a post that reminded me of something: for the majority of my life and the lives of many people my age, we have been under some level of threat from terrorists. It also reminded me of one of my early memories. I remember … Continue reading

Translating Stupid

Translating Stupid

Quite often, as one of the few British people in the office, I’m called upon to explain the all manner of cultural points for my German colleagues. The questions can range from “why all the mint sauce?” to “is it true that you all stop at 15.00 for tea?”. In the past I enjoyed these … Continue reading

German News Round-up

Although I endeavour to bring you the most up to date stories about living in Germany, sometimes there isn’t much to tell. For instance, this weekend seemed to revolve around wedding planning and more importantly, wedding invitations. Now, as entertaining as that sounds, I doubt that anyone wants to read about my adventures buying a … Continue reading

Ski Week

Ski Week

Things are suspiciously quiet here in Germany, almost too quiet. Although this should be a week like any other, this morning I had an unerring sense that things were not as they should be. For a start there were definitely fewer lunatics on the road this morning, which allowed me to avoid my usual morning … Continue reading

Predict-a-thon 2014

Predict-a-thon 2014

2013 is slowly receding into the distance and as we stand forlornly on the a railway platform, waving a hanky, we wipe a single tear from our collective eyes. Oh, 2013, you were such a lovely companion with all your choice tit-bits of news and occasional revelations, we’ll miss you. But wait! Who is this … Continue reading

Britain, we really need to talk…

Britain, we really need to talk…

As a youngest of four brothers I learned fairly quickly that life was filled with unwritten rules. Although they were not always easy to understand at first, once you discovered one you didn’t soon forget. This was mainly because learning a new rule, unlike in the moralistic cartoons I watched on Saturday mornings, generally came … Continue reading

How to Beat the Germans

How to Beat the Germans

Tomorrow sees two of Europe’s biggest footballing nations collide in an epic showdown that is sure to be heavy on drama and light on compassion. Yet, while Portugal plays Sweden, another footballing kerfuffle will be occurring hundreds of miles from Sweden’s Friends Arena. A small meeting between England and Germany awaits at Wembley on Tuesday. … Continue reading
